About the 44th District Print E-mail

The 44th House of Delegates District runs along the Potomac River from Huntington Avenue to Fort Belvoir, taking in both sides of U.S. 1, excluding Belleview, Marlan Forest, Hollin Hills, and the Kirkside Communities. The district includes areas commonly known as Huntington, Bellehaven, Groveton, Hybla Valley, Fort Hunt, Gum Springs, and Woodlawn.

The 44th District is one of the most diverse districts in Northern Virginia. Its residents live in both spacious homes along the Potomac River and in modest apartments along U.S. 1. It has some of the youngest populations in Northern Virginia and some of the largest concentrations of seniors who have stayed because it is a wonderful place to live.

The spine of the 44th District is U.S. 1 or Richmond Highway, one of the oldest roads in Fairfax County. Originally an Indian path that paralleled the Fall Line, it was the primary route between Washington, D.C. and Richmond until the opening of the Shirley Highway in 1946 diverted traffic to a more direct and (at the time) less congested route. Today, U.S. 1 serves as the commercial heart of the 44th District as represented by the Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce.

The 44th District contains the entire Mt. Vernon High School Pyramid, most of the West Potomac High School Pyramid, and a very small part of the Edison High School Pyramid. The 44th District has many of the top performing-schools in Fairfax County, schools that continue to excel notwithstanding significant challenges.

The 44th District has some of the most incredible natural assets in Fairfax County. The Potomac River runs along the eastern border and is accessible via the George Washington Memorial Parkway and Mount Vernon Bike Trail. Dogue Creek and Little Hunting Creek provide canoeing, fishing, birding, and wildlife watching opportunities and are fed by Huntley Meadows Park – the largest park in Fairfax County.

The 44th District also contains most of the five farms of President George Washington known as Mount Vernon including his Gristmill. The Mount Vernon Estate employs over 450 people, receives over 1 million visitors per year, and has a significant impact on the local economy.
